Honor Code and Discipline Guidelines

GENERAL

  • The school expects a commitment to academic excellence. To achieve this end:
  • No disruption of classroom routine will be tolerated.
  • The atmosphere of the classroom must be one of warmth and mutual respect.
  • Homework must always be done on time, and thorough preparation must be carried out before tests and examinations.
  • Students are expected to take pride in their school. Littering will not be tolerated. Locker rooms are to be kept clean at all times.
  • Lying or falsifying the truth is unacceptable and can lead to suspension or expulsion.
  • No student may through his/her behavior or attitude, disrupt the learning process of other students.
  • No ball activities may take place in the school building, except in the gym.
  • Students are expected to move in a quiet and orderly fashion in the corridors/hallways and stairways. No rough play or unruliness is allowed.
  • Teachers and visitors must always be courteously greeted both in classrooms and hallways—this includes standing for guests in the classroom.
  • Students must treat their teachers and fellow students with respect.
  • Punctuality is essential. Latecomers must report to the office, and a “Late Check In” form must be completed. Parents are expected to co-operate in this regard and to provide a note explaining late arrivals. Habitual late arrival may lead to a detention and grade reduction.
  • While students are encouraged to think independently and to ask questions, insolent or insulting behavior to teachers or fellow students is unacceptable.
  • As students are regarded at all times on and off campus as being representatives of AH, misbehavior or discourtesy will not be tolerated, and may result in disciplinary action.
  • No offensive language will be tolerated.
  • Students who fall ill during school hours must report to the office before going to the Sick Room or leaving the school. If permission is granted to leave the school early, the “Early Check Out” form must be completed.
  • Cellphones, pagers, MP3 players, and all other electronic devices are not allowed at school. If a student brings any of these items they must be handed in at the front office for safekeeping in the morning before school starts and picked up after school. Students caught with any electronic items not approved by the office will have them confiscated.
  • Students are responsible for their personal belongings and valuables. Personal possessions and bags should not be left unattended.
  • When campuses adjoin each other, students are restricted to their grade appropriate campus. Interaction between elementary, middle and high school students during school hours is not permitted.
  • Students may not involve themselves in socially unacceptable behavior, e.g. improper physical conduct between students.
  • Body piercing or tattooing oneself or another student is not permitted. One hole per ear lobe, for girls only, is permitted.
  • Jewelry is to be kept to a minimum and no distracting or excessive jewelry will be tolerated.
  • Gum is not allowed at school.
  • Students may not change any computer setups whatsoever. For example: no screen savers, autoexec, config, prompts, names, backgrounds, hardware or software settings to be changed. Students are not allowed to load software of any kind without written permission from the administration, nor may they delete any files, change passwords/names or hack into any computer system or fellow students’ files.
  • No inappropriate tiles/software will be tolerated. Students may not access, display, store or print socially unacceptable files or pictures, or have them in their possession on school premises. American Heritage reserves the right to monitor material accessed by students.
  • Eating or drinking is not allowed in the Computer room, Library, laboratories or classrooms, except bottled water.
  • Cheating on exams or assignments will be regarded as a serious offence. Plagiarism, whether from the Internet or from a printed source, is a form of cheating and will be dealt with appropriately.
  • Students who are accessories to cheating, or who provide information to another student during an assignment/exam, will be guilty of cheating.
  • Students found using other students’ passwords in the Computer room or changing names to gain access to other students’ files will be charged with cheating.
  • Students may not work in the Computer room unsupervised, except when authorized.
  • Students are not permitted to use teachers’ computers.
  • LDS standards and values must be kept on and off campus in order to remain a student at AHSJ.
