At
American Heritage of South Jordan we use the Utah State Core
Curriculum as a guide in order to ensure that each student is
gaining the knowledge necessary in their various subjects. We
combine it with the Thomas Jefferson Education model and The
Principle Approach from the Foundation for American Christian
Education, which inspire reflective thinking and creativity,
glorifying God, the Creator, not man and his knowledge and accomplishments—bringing
liberty to learning. Placing God’s Principles at the heart
of each subject guides every aspect of the teaching and learning
process—our methods with the students, the way we
govern our classrooms, and the design and content of our curriculum. This is
found in all subjects, including English or Literature, Science, History, Math,
Art, Music, and Recreation.
At American Heritage we recognize that each student is at a
different level and stage in their education. We have developed
a program where the students are placed in a Language Arts and
Math class based solely upon their level, rather than their grade
or age. This allows us to work with the students in their reading,
writing and mathematics based on the knowledge they have and
build upon that foundation. We use the Saxon Math program and
have created a unique blend of wonderful curriculum for the Language
Arts classes including the Classics!
By focusing on the core subjects we feel that each student will
leave American Heritage of South Jordan with a strong foundation
in a number of areas, including music and life skills and be
prepared for their future. Although we do not expect perfection
from our students, we do expect them to always put forth their
best effort. Academics is important at American Heritage and
we have a 2.5 grade point average requirement. We feel that each
student that tries to do their best is able to maintain our minimum
standard. It is our hope that each student will be inspired and
encouraged to reach for the stars and be motivated to do their
best.
As a faith-based school we begin each day with devotional where
the students recite the Pledge of Allegiance, read from the scriptures,
sing, and have prayer. During the fifteen minute devotional each
morning the office is closed and the halls are quiet. This is
a time for reflection and for the students to prepare for their
day of learning. Although we are not sponsored by The Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the standards and values
that the school is led by are modeled after the LDS Church. However,
we welcome students, families and faculty from any and all religions.
Aside from the devotional and our selected classical music, our
halls are kept quiet in order to aid in the education of each
student. The peaceful atmosphere encourages respect, consideration,
and focus.
The final aspect that sets American
Heritage of South Jordan apart from many others is our dress
code. Each student is required to wear a uniform which puts
aside the competition and concern for popularity and allows
each student to be themselves. We have also found that when
the students are dressed nicer and uphold the dress code we
have set out, they speak and act differently—which
changes the educational experience.
